Veterinary Medicine Isn’t Broken. The Model Around It Is.
With Sean Connolly, CEO & Co-Founder, Long Run VIP Pet Care
I spent nearly a decade helping build Castle Connolly Private Health Partners. During that time, I saw something remarkable happen when you remove volume pressure from a physician’s day: medicine gets better.
Doctors remember why they went into the field. Patients feel seen. And outcomes improve— because the relationship finally has room to breathe.
Then, 4 years ago, I adopted Jake, an English Setter rescue with a lot of personality and a habit of keeping his vet on her toes. Somewhere between visits, I found myself asking a question I couldn’t shake: why hasn’t the concierge care model made its way into veterinary medicine?
When I started asking around, I realized I wasn’t alone. Pet parents were feeling it, too.
That question became the foundation for Long Run VIP Pet Care, a company built to help DVMs practice more intentional, preventive, and personalized medicine.
A System Under Strain
Veterinary medicine isn’t broken, but the model surrounding it is under strain.
Appointment schedules are packed. Burnout among DVMs continues to rise. And pet parents, who are more emotionally and financially invested in their animals than ever before, want personalized, preventive care that they can’t always get in a system that can’t prioritize time and relationships.
Most veterinarians didn’t enter this profession to operate at high volume. They chose it because they care deeply about animals, science, and the families they serve. But the current structure makes it increasingly difficult to practice in a way that reflects that intention.
What Preventive, High-Touch Care Actually Looks Like
Concierge veterinary medicine isn’t just a luxury add-on. It’s a fundamental shift toward relationship-focused care. When a DVM works within a concierge-based model, the entire dynamic shifts. Appointments aren’t as rushed. The veterinarian has more opportunity to get to know the pet’s history, temperament, and environment. There’s time, for everyone, to ask better questions… and to actually listen.
Preventive and personalized care becomes the norm. And relationships and outcomes improve as a result.
For the pet, this means earlier detection, thoughtful decision-making, and care that considers the whole animal, not just isolated symptoms. Physical health, mental engagement, emotional wellbeing, and environment all play a role in the care plan and long-term outcomes.
For the pet parent, it creates something that’s often missing in healthcare: a true partnership. Someone accessible. Someone invested. Someone who truly knows their pet.
Why This Matters Now
The fundamentals behind this model aren’t new.
Concierge (membership-based) care has already reshaped human healthcare, creating more sustainable practices and better experiences for both providers and patients. The same principles translate naturally to veterinary medicine.
A right-sized membership base creates predictable revenue, allowing DVMs to step off the treadmill of constant volume. In many cases, practices see significantly higher revenue per client—not by doing more, but by doing things differently.
The Consumer Is Already There
Pet owners have never been more emotionally or financially committed to their animals’ well-being. They’re already investing in high-quality nutrition, training, products and services, and looking for preventive care. What they can’t always find is a veterinary model that aligns with that level of care and expectation.
A concierge care model meets the desires of the modern pet parent. Priority access. Ongoing communication. Thoughtful, individualized care plans. Continuity of care.
And when people experience that level of care, they don’t go back. They stay. They engage. And they share it with their friends, neighbors, dog park buddies, and co-workers. They advocate; they don’t churn.
The Long Run
The best outcomes in veterinary medicine are built on continuity, trust, and time. Those things require a model that accommodates them and is designed to help them flourish.
Jake deserves a veterinarian who truly knows him. So does every other pet out there. And the veterinarians who want to practice that kind of medicine deserve a way to do it.
That’s where this is going.
